COMPTON, Calif. -- The Urban Youth Academy has teamed up with the Compton Unified School District with the mission of promoting baseball to the community. The “Caravan” mission is to introduce baseball to every 4th and 5th grader in the city of Compton. There are 24 elementary schools in the city of Compton and our goal is to visit every elementary school by the end of the 2011 school year.
The Academy Caravan features an on-campus clinic for all of the 4th and 5th graders of each elementary school. The students are split up into 4 groups then rotate through 4 stations: throwing, infield, outfield and hitting. They are taught the fundamentals at each station, form the correct grip on the baseball to the proper way of fielding a ground-ball. So far, we’ve visited 10 elementary school and it has been a pleasurable experience and we are excited to continue our traveling caravan throughout the city of Compton.
