What All High School Athletes and Parents Should Know.....

Fact # 3- Generally, when college athletes are “in season” they may spend 15 to 30 hours per week training and playing in games. In addition, they will also be spending a significant amount of time traveling to games. Therefore, when high school athletes are comparing different colleges, it is extremely important that they find out from other players how much time is required to devote to their sport. Make sure to ask about practice time, weight training time, and travel schedule as well as off season training.

What All High School Athletes and Parents Should Know.....

Fact #2 -  **FORGET STUDING ABROAD OR PARTICIPATING IN INTERNSHIPS IN MOST DI PROGRAMS**

According to Karen Weaver, director of Athletics for Penn State University-Abington and a TV color analyst for CBS College Sports and Big Ten Network, in most DI programs it is very unlikely that athletes will be able to participate in studying abroad or working in internships. However, in DII and DIII it is more likely that athlets can participate in studying abroad and internships, as well as, other campus extracurricular activities.

What All High School Athletes and Parents Should Know......

Fact #1 -  **FOUR YEAR FULL ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIPS ARE A MYTH**

Contrary to what parents and high school athletes believe, guaranteed four year full ride scholarships are a myth. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) stipulates that athletic scholarships are good for one year at a time and are potentially renewable at the coach’s discretion. Coaches that promise full ride 4 year scholarships are not telling the truth. In addition, if an athlete is injured the athlete may lose their scholarship.

"Did You Know.....THURSDAY"

Compton, Calif. -- Fun history and baseball facts for Thursdays!
Today in BASEBALL....
Did you know that on this day, MARCH 24th,  100 years ago, Mrs. Helene Hathaway Britton became the first female owner of a Major League Baseball Club?
YES! When Matthew Stanley Robison, president of the Cardinals, died unexpectedly, in 1911, he left the club and a bulk of his estate to his niece.

Today in HISTORY.....
Exxon Valdez Oil Spill
March 24th, 1989 marked the date of the largest U.S. territory, oil spill. The 53 million gallon tanker, Exxon Valdez, was traveling from Valdez, Alaska to Los Angeles, California when the efforts to avoid ice, failed, causing them to travel outside normal shipping lanes and ultimately causing the tanker to run aground on Bligh Reef in Prince William Sound, Alaska. An estimated 11 million gallons of oil were spilled. High wind and currents were part of the failed containment efforts that rendered 700 miles of coastline pollution and hundreds of thousands of birds and animals injured or dead.

After years of negotiation, in October 1991, Exxon and Alaska settled by paying $25 million, less than 4% of the cleanup aid promised by Exxon.

"Wacky WEDNESDAY"

First things first, the answer to yesterday’s “Trivia Tuesday” question....
Question: This player managed the Indians to become the First African American Manager in the Major Leagues.... Who is he and in what year did he Manage?

If you answered Frank Robinson in 1975, ding ding ding ding!!! You are CORRECT!

Here is a little bio on Mr. Robinson-
Born August 31, 1935 in Beaumont, TX. One of baseball’s greatest gamers. As Rookie of the Year in 1966 and an MVP (Most Valuable Player) in both leagues (with the Reds in 1961 and with the Orioles in 1966), he developed a reputation as an aggressive outfielder and hard-charging base runner. The American League Triple Crown winner in 1966, Robinson amassed 586 homeruns and ended his career just 57 hits shy of the 3,000 club. His intelligence and leadership helped him become the Major League’s first African-American field manager in 1975, when he skippered the Cleveland Indians. Elected into the Hall of Fame by Baseball Writers in 1982.

Compton, Calif. -- Every Wednesday, I will do my best to try to find a “wacky” or funny picture, video, poem, etc. related to baseball. I am also reaching out for help, if you have any home videos of something funny that happened to you or someone you know, while playing a sport email them to me at Liz.Vazquez@mlb.com and your video may be featured on this website.

2011 MLB Scouting Bureau Invitational Showcase

COMPTON, Calif. -- What a great event to showcase the Southern California amateur baseball talent.
Many scouts were at hand, taking notes on all of the great talent on display this great Saturday afternoon. This event marks the start of many pre-draft workouts to come, leading up to the MLB First-Year Player Draft. 200+ representative scouts from all of the Major League clubs were in attendance to witness the first glimpse of the 2011 graduating class.
"It's a great opportunity to come to a Major League facility and be able to show your stuff in front of hundreds of scouts," said Frank Marcos, senior director of the MLB Scouting Bureau. "A lot of kids don't get that type of opportunity when they play their regular high school games because there might just be a few scouts. But here, they have a great facility and a venue to show off their stuff."
The participants were hand-picked by the MLB Scouting Bureau, with players coming from as far north as Modesto, as far south as San Diego and as far east as Palm Desert. It included some of the top prospects in the area, such as left-hander Henry Owens and infielders Christian Lopes, Phil Evans and Travis Harrison.
That's not to mention the sons of a few notable athletes -- Trevor Gretzky, the son of hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, and Ryan Garvey, the son of former All-Star first baseman Steve Garvey.
"It's awesome to come out and see where you're at next to all the other Southern California kids," said Gretzky, a first baseman at Oaks Christian High School. "I didn't expect this many scouts, but you just have to play baseball. It's just awesome being out here on the field with all these guys."
"It's great," said Ryan Garvey, who plays third base and left field at Palm Desert High School. "I get to see all my buddies who I played with in travel ball. Its great because it's all the best athletes from around Southern California."

The participants ar the event were dividid into two team, representing the North and South, and performed various drill in the morning. They ran the 60-yard dash and took batting and fielding practice before playing in  controlled game with wood bats later in the afternoon.

The event couldn't have been held without the support of MLB's Urban Youth Academy, which hosted the showcase for the fifth consecutive year. And now with more Urban Youth Academies on the way, included a completed one in Houston under the leadership of MLB's executive vice president of baseball development Jimmie Lee Solomon, the MLB Scouting Bureau is excited about hosting similar events at Academy venues in other cities in the future.

"As Urban Youth Academies around the country develop, we certainly want to tap into those resources from the scouting bureau's point of view for events like this," Marcos said. "They've done a good job with these Urban Youth Academies, and I know that as they go forward they'll continue to improve them. Jimmie Lee Solomon has done a great job, and it's helped scouts, because now we can go into areas where scouts didn't go as much and now have facilities to run camps."

MLB "Academy Caravan"

COMPTON, Calif. -- The Urban Youth Academy has teamed up with the Compton Unified School District with the mission of promoting baseball to the community. The “Caravan” mission is to introduce baseball to every 4th and 5th grader in the city of Compton. There are 24 elementary schools in the city of Compton and our goal is to visit every elementary school by the end of the 2011 school year.

The Academy Caravan features an on-campus clinic for all of the 4th and 5th graders of each elementary school. The students are split up into 4 groups then rotate through 4 stations: throwing, infield, outfield and hitting. They are taught the fundamentals at each station, form the correct grip on the baseball to the proper way of fielding a ground-ball. So far, we’ve visited 10 elementary school and it has been a pleasurable experience and we are excited to continue our traveling caravan throughout the city of Compton.
