The first World Series MVP award was given to pitcher John Podres of the Brooklyn Dodgers after the 1955 World Series won by the Dodgers, 4 games to 3, over the New York Yankees. Podres started and won two games in the Series, including pitching a shutout in Game 7.

Trivia Question: How many World Series home runs did Mickey Mantle hit?
Mickey Mantel hit 18 World Series home runs, which still stands as a record. He is regarded by many to be the greatest switch hitter of all time, and one of the greatest players in baseball history. Mantle was elected in the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1974.

Trivia Question: What Pittsburgh Pirate had exactly 3,000 career hits before dying tragically in a place crash?

Roberto Clemente was a career-long Pittsburgh Pirate, playing with the team from 1955 until he was tragically killed in a plane crash in 1972. In 1966, Clemente won the National League MVP award. He was a 15-time All-Star selection. He helped Pittsburgh to two World Series championships and won 12 Gold Glove Awards for his outstanding performance as the team’s right fielder. In 1971, Roberto Clemente was named the 1971 World Series MVP and he was presented with the Babe Ruth Award. After his untimely death, Clemente’s number, 21, was retired by the Pittsburgh Pirates and he was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1973. Clemente was the only player in the history of Major League Baseball for whom the required 5-year wait period was waived.

Trivia Question: Who was the first player to hit four (4) homeruns in one game, and in what year did he hit them?

 

Bobby Lowe - May 30th, 1894

 

Robert Lincoln "Bobby" Lowe (July 10, 1865 – December 8, 1951), nicknamed "Link", was an American baseball player, coach and scout. He played Major League Baseball for the Boston Beaneaters (1890–1901), Chicago Cubs (1902–1903), Pittsburgh Pirates (1904), and Detroit Tigers (1904–1907). Lowe was the first player in Major League history to hit four home runs in a game, a feat which he accomplished in May 1894. He also tied or set Major League records with 17 total bases in a single game and six hits in a single game. Lowe was a versatile player who played at every position but was principally known as a second baseman. When he retired in 1907, his his career fielding average of .953 at second base was was the highest in Major League history.

Lowe also worked as a baseball manager, coach and scout. He was the player-manager of the Detroit Tigers during the last half of the 1904 season. He was also a player-manger for the minor league Grand Rapids Wolverines in 1908. He coached college baseball in 1907 for the University of Michigan and from 1909 to 1910 for Washington & Jefferson College. He was also a scout for the Detroit Tigers in 1911 and 1912.

What All High School Athletes and Parents Should Know.....

Fact # 3- Generally, when college athletes are “in season” they may spend 15 to 30 hours per week training and playing in games. In addition, they will also be spending a significant amount of time traveling to games. Therefore, when high school athletes are comparing different colleges, it is extremely important that they find out from other players how much time is required to devote to their sport. Make sure to ask about practice time, weight training time, and travel schedule as well as off season training.

What All High School Athletes and Parents Should Know.....

Fact #2 -  **FORGET STUDING ABROAD OR PARTICIPATING IN INTERNSHIPS IN MOST DI PROGRAMS**

According to Karen Weaver, director of Athletics for Penn State University-Abington and a TV color analyst for CBS College Sports and Big Ten Network, in most DI programs it is very unlikely that athletes will be able to participate in studying abroad or working in internships. However, in DII and DIII it is more likely that athlets can participate in studying abroad and internships, as well as, other campus extracurricular activities.


-Just some info to know while searching for colleges and univesities to attend.

What All High School Athletes and Parents Should Know......

Fact #1 -  **FOUR YEAR FULL ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIPS ARE A MYTH**



Contrary to what parents and high school athletes believe, guaranteed four year full ride scholarships are a myth. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) stipulates that athletic scholarships are good for one year at a time and are potentially renewable at the coach’s discretion. Coaches that promise full ride 4 year scholarships are not telling the truth. In addition, if an athlete is injured the athlete may lose their scholarship.

YES! When Matthew Stanley Robison, president of the Cardinals, died unexpectedly, in 1911, he left the club and a bulk of his estate to his niece. 

Today in HISTORY.....

Exxon Valdez Oil Spill

March 24^th, 1989 marked the date of the largest U.S. territory, oil spill. The 53 million gallon tanker, Exxon Valdez, was traveling from Valdez, Alaska to Los Angeles, California when the efforts to avoid ice, failed, causing them to travel outside normal shipping lanes and ultimately causing the tanker to run aground on Bligh Reef in Prince William Sound, Alaska. An estimated 11 million gallons of oil were spilled. High wind and currents were part of the failed containment efforts that rendered 700 miles of coastline pollution and hundreds of thousands of birds and animals injured or dead. 

After years of negotiation, in October 1991, Exxon and Alaska settled by paying $25 million, less than 4% of the cleanup aid promised by Exxon.

First things first, the answer to yesterday’s “Trivia Tuesday” question....

Question: This player managed the Indians to become the First African American Manager in the Major Leagues.... Who is he and in what year did he Manage?

If you answered Frank Robinson in 1975, ding ding ding ding!!! You are CORRECT!

Here is a little bio on Mr. Robinson-

Born August 31, 1935 in Beaumont, TX. One of baseball’s greatest gamers. As Rookie of the Year in 1966 and an MVP (Most Valuable Player) in both leagues (with the Reds in 1961 and with the Orioles in 1966), he developed a reputation as an aggressive outfielder and hard-charging base runner. The American League Triple Crown winner in 1966, Robinson amassed 586 homeruns and ended his career just 57 hits shy of the 3,000 club. His intelligence and leadership helped him become the Major League’s first African-American field manager in 1975, when he skippered the Cleveland Indians. Elected into the Hall of Fame by Baseball Writers in 1982.

Final U.S. Army Assembly

Compton, Calif. -- The final day of the U.S. Army Caravan was threatened by mother nature. The 82nd Airborne Division’s All-American Chorus pulled off another amazing performance with the help of the Southern University Human Jukebox. In the end another donation of $1,500 was made to the Compton High School band director, Roy Thomas, and the Tarbabes band.

U.S. Army Visits Local High School

COMPTON, Calif. -- Day two of the U.S. Army high school assemblies was a success! The Dominguez Dons happily opened up their high school doors and welcomed the 82nd Airborne Division’s All-American Chorus. Once again, an amazing performance by the U.S. troops. They sang their own renditions of The Temptations’ “My Girl”, Lynayrd Skynyrd’s “Sweet Home Alabama”, and James Taylor’s “Carolina In My Mind”, along with songs that hit close to home because of their military background, such as, “God Bless America” and “Proud To Be An American.”
